ITINERARY
1.) ARRIVAL AT THE AIRPORT
Transfer from the airport to the hotel. Our guide will meet us at the airport and help us with our luggage.
2.) FROZEN WATERFALL
15 min transfer will take us to the ski resort where we start our first hike. Before we start, group leader will give us a quick lesson on how to put on the snowshoes on and how to use them with the pair of poles to move around. It is also necessary to learn few facts about avalanches as well. Starting off the busy ski resort Zverovka you will leave the crowds and noise of the lifts behind and disappear in the pine woods walking gradually up the hill. Touched by quiet Mother Nature, fresh mountain air and followed by nothing just a singing of few birds you will reach a frozen Rohacsky Waterfall - which turns to huge icicle every winter. It is never the same. Icicle changes its color every day from green, blue, purple.... depending on temperature, snow conditions and amount of water. Coming down from the mountains you will try secret path used only by mountain rescuers.
3.) SALATINSKA VALLEY AND BRESTOVA PEAK
15 min transfer to starting point. This morning we will take a chair lift higher up the mountain above the pine tree lines where we will start Brestova peak expedition. Wide open Salatinska valley is leading to many Tatra peaks which we will have all in front. Brestova at hight of 1902 metres offers the best views of all. From the top is the best view of the white sleeping country bellow us, little mountain villages spread all over the valleys, Poland and its part of Tatra Mountains. If you are lucky you can spot a chamois.
PLEASE NOTE: Today's route might be changed in case of bad weather or dangerous avalanche conditions. It would be replaced by route in lower elevation.
4.) ORAVICE OPEN HILLS AND THERMAL POOLS
20 min transfer to Oravice. Today is a relaxing day. The village of Oravice, close to the border with Poland, is famous for its highly mineralized thermal water, which springs in the depth of more than 1 km. Snowsheing round the Oravice snowy hills is easier than days before in Tatra Mountains, you can admire ski resorts from the distance and see the contrast of huge steam coming out of thermal pools in the middle of snowy country. Experience pleasant relaxing moments in hot thermal water in the afternoon.
5.) SECRET TRAIL OF PARTISANS AND CULTURAL EVENING
15 min transfer to starting point. Following the footsteps of partisans from the Second World War we will walk through the deep forest walking slightly up the hill. After about 2 hours snowshoe hiking you will get to hidden "Partisans hospital" which was built during the war. It takes just a few minutes tonight to get to Open Air Museum of Orava village where the history of local life is celebrated. There are many historical artefacts worth to see and learn about. But our visit will be timed to also make the most of the cultural evening that museum organises every Wednesday in winter. You will see people dressed in folk costumes, learn some local dances and games and also try honey drink.
6.) HIGHLANDERS SETTLEMENTS BOROVE AND THEIR NEVER ENDING HILLS
15 min transfer to village Borove. From the main road to Liptovsky Mikulas we can see picturesque villages of Borove and Huty. Away from civilisation and daily stress mostly older people can be found in those romantic looking villages. Houses are spread over large hilly areas and sometimes there are few kilometres from house to house. Today we will walk up above the highlanders villages where footsteps of wild animals can be easily find. Snow is deeper here and it seem like you are far away from civilisation, as it hasn't been discovered by crowds of tourists yet. Surprisingly there is little cosy pension at the top of the hill where you will warm up and refresh to get new energy.
7.) FREE DAY
Feel free to choose your own activity on your last day. Zuberec offers great skiing facilities, there are different slopes from beginners to professional ones, or perhaps you might like to try cross country skiing, dog sledding or snowshoe again. Your group leader will be on hand to make the best plan for your last day in Tatra Mountains.
