There are 44 caves and abysses in Slovakia which are considered to be a natural national monument. Currently there are 12 caves open to the public which we can visit from the west to the east of Slovakia. What a magical underground art that nature has been creating for centuries. 1. THE CAVE DRINY - National Nature Monument
Length of pathway: 450 m Duration of the guided tour: 35 min. Situated in the Smolenicky Karst, the area of Carpathians Protected Landscape. It was formed in the Lower Cretaceous chert limestones, by the corrosion of precipitation waters. It reaches the length of 680 m. Cave spaces, with prevailing fissure corridors, are decorated with rich sinter fillings. Draperies with tooth-like edging, sinter waterfalls, pagoda-like stalagmites, stalactites and sinter pools are typical for this cave. The cave was discovered in 1930 and open to the public

2. HARMANECKA CAVE - National Nature Monument
Length of pathway: 1020 m Duration of the guided tour: 60 min. Situated in the Harmanecka valley, in southern part of Velka Fatra, near town Banska Bystrica. The overall length of the cave is about 2,763 m. The cave is known for a rich occurrence of white soft sinter. Mighty pagoda-like stalagmites, sinter waterfalls, draperies and sinter pools can easily catch your eyes. The cave shelters 9 species of bats with the dominant Myotis myotis - having the colony of about 1,000 members. Its winter colony ranks among the most important ones in Slovakia.

3. DEMANOVSKA ICE CAVE - National Nature Monument
Length of pathway: 850 m Duration of the guided tour: 45 min. Situated in the Demanovska valley in the reritory of Low Tatras. . The cave was created by river Demanovka. It is 1,975 m long. Ice filling occurs in the lower parts of the cave. Ground ice, ice columns, stalactites and stalagmites are present. This is also the finding place of bones of various animals including bear, which were taken for dragon bones in the 18th century.

4. DEMANOVSKA CAVE OF LIBERTY - National Nature Monument
Length of pathway: A - 1145 m, B - 2150 m Duration of the tour: A - 60 min., B - 100 min Situated in the Demanovska valley, which is the entrance to one of the most beautiful National Parks in Slovakia called Low Tatras.

5. BYSTRIANSKA CAVE - National Nature Monument
Length of pathway: 545 m Duration of the guided tour: 40 min. Situated by the southern slopes of Low Tatras. It was formed by waters of Bystrianka stream making it attractive for visitors. This cave is divided into two parts. It is the Old cave and the new cave. Both are now open to the public.

6. VAZECKA CAVE - National Nature Monument
Length of pathway: 325 m Duration of the guided tour: 30 min. Situated in the Vazecky Karst. It was formed by the waters of the White Vah river. The length of the cave is 530 m. The cave spaces are decorated mostly by stalactites, stalagmites and sinter pools. It is an important finding-place of the bones of bear (Ursus spelaeus). The entrance hall was long known to the local people. The continuation of this cave spaces was discovered in 1922.

7. BELIANSKA CAVE - National Nature Monument
Length of pathway: 1370 m Duration of the guided tour: 70 min. Situated in the eastern part of the Belianske Tatras over the Tatranska Kotlina, in the National Nature Reserve Belianske Tatras, in the territory of the Tatra National Park. It was created in the Middle Triassic limestones by corrosion and erosion waters from melting snow and ice or strong precipitation. It reaches the length of 3,018 m. Sinter "waterfalls", pagoda-like stalagmites and several sinter pools are very attractive. Also other forms of sinter filling are richly represented. Front parts of the cave were known to gold miners as late as in the first half of the 18th century.

8. DOBSINSKA ICE CAVE National Nature Monument & World Natural Heritage
Length of pathway: 515 m Duration of the guided tour: 30 min. Situated in the Slovak Paradise.It was formed by streams of Hnilec river. The cave length is 1,483 m. Ice filling occurs in the form of ground ice, ice "waterfalls", ice stalagmites and columns. The total volume of ice is 110,100 cubic meters with maximum thickness of 26.5 m. It ranks among the most important ice caves in the world.

9. OCHTINSKA ARAGONITE CAVE -National Nature Monument & World Nature Heritage
Length of pathway: 585 m Duration of the guided tour: 30 min. Situated in the Ochtinsky cryptokarst in the Revucka Highland. Overall length of the cave is 300 m. A rich aragonite filling was formed under specific hydrochemical and climatic conditions in closed underground spaces. It occurs in kidney-shaped, needle-shaped and spiral forms.

10. CAVE DOMICA - National Nature Monument & World Natural Heritage
Length of pathway: A - 780 m, B - 1560 m Duration of the tour: A - 45 min., B - 85 min. Boat trip 140 m Situated in the Slovak Paradise. It was formed in the Middle Triassic lime stones by underground streams of Styx and Domica. Overall cave length is 5,358 m. Shields and drums, cascade pools, onion-shaped stalactites and pagoda-like stalagmites are typical for its rich sinter filling. Among bats prevails, forming here the most abundant colony in Slovakia. It is the most important finding-place of the Neolithic "bukovohorska" culture (4,000 years B.C

11. GOMBASECKA CAVE - National nature monument & World Natural Heritage
Length of pathway: 530 m Duration of the guided tour: 30 min. Situated in the western foothill of the Silicka Plateau, between Canyon of Slana River Roznava and Plesivec, This is the Protected Landscape Area and Biospheric Reserve of the Slovak Karst. Overall length of the spring cave is 1,525 m. It excels with its unique tiny sinter straw stalactites reaching up to 3 m.. It was discovered in 1951 by voluntary-spelunkers of Roznava, members of the Slovak Speleological Association.

12. JASOVSKA CAVE - National nature monument & World Nature Heritage
Length of pathway: 720 m Duration of the guided tour: 45 min. Situated in the Medzevska Upland at its joint with the east margin of the Jasovska Plateau of the Slovak Karst, near Jasov. It is located in the National Nature Reserve Jasovske dubiny, in the territory of the Protected Landscape Area and Biospheric Reserve of the Slovak Karst. It was formed by the waters of Bodva River, at five developmental levels. It reaches the length of 2,811 m. 19 species of bats have been found in the cave with dominating Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, being one of the most important winter refuges of this species in Slovakia. It was inhabited by man in the Bronze Age.
